Vermilion (sometimes cinnabar red) is a paint, color family, and pigment most often made from the powdered mineral cinnabar (a toxic form of mercury sulfide) and its corresponding color since ancient times until the 19th century. It is most often synonymous with red-orange, which often takes a modern form that is only 11% brighter (at maximum brightness).
